School of Choice Scholarship - Recipient of $5,500
The 2020 Holiday Farm Fire left an impact on Myra Dion who grew up in the McKenzie River drainage that was devastated by the flames.
That impact is steering Myra toward a degree in forest management at Oregon State University.
“I’ve always loved nature,” says the recent graduate of McKenzie River Community School. “Growing up along the McKenzie, we spent a lot of time hiking and playing outside. Then with the Holiday Farm Fire, I saw the effects of bad forest management. I want to do something to fix that. I figured forestry is a good path in that field.”
Myra, 18, was selected for the Lane Electric Cooperative $5,500 School of Choice Scholarship that will help with her expenses at OSU.
Myra has been dual enrolled at the McKenzie school and online at Lane Community College for the last three years. She’s earned 51 credits at LCC so will be entering OSU as a sophomore.
Myra says she was “very happy” when she received notice of the Lane Electric scholarship.
“It was one of the first scholarships I received,” she says. “I’m thankful for the help. It would have been difficult for me to go to college without the scholarship help.”
